Unfulfilled hopes
The author traces the development of mutual relations from the birth of Czechoslovakia and the peace treaties that reconstructed Europe after 1918, through various attempts at international security in the 1920s, to Great Britain's gradual withdrawal of support for the post-war shape of Central Europe in the second half of the 1930s. He analyses in detail the British policy of appeasement, culminating in Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signing the Munich Agreement. Jindřich Dejmek draws on a vast amount of official sources from the Czechoslovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the British Foreign Office, previously unknown to the wider public.
