The Rath family is divided. Charlotte Rath, née Ritter, wanted to be abroad long ago, but circumstances have kept her in Berlin. Her former foster son Fritze has been placed in the secure ward of the Wittenau psychiatric hospital, her best friend Greta has vanished without a trace and is a murder suspect. Meanwhile, Gereon Rath, who is in hiding and considered dead by the authorities, finds Germany too hot to handle and boards an airship to escape to the USA. While Charly tries to get Fritze out of the clinic, solve Greta's disappearance and crack the murder case, things are happening on the other side of the Atlantic that she would never have thought possible…
