Three from Jerusalem
An exceptional collection of previously unknown short stories, reports, and reflections by Arnošt Lustig, a world-renowned writer, journalist, and humanist. As a young man, Arnošt Lustig (1926–2011) survived the horrors of the Holocaust. These experiences fundamentally shaped his literary work. He wrote the short stories while serving as a war correspondent during the Israeli War of Independence from 1948–1949. In addition to stories from Israel, the book also contains reflections and reports reflecting on the Holocaust and exile.
The common denominator of all the texts is the exploration of the feelings and lives of ordinary people under existential pressure. The author captures his characters in extreme and everyday, yet always difficult, situations. He writes in an engaging and human manner, with the drama and objectivity devoid of pathos that are characteristic of his later work as well. Lustig offers empathy and timeless wisdom, which are just as relevant today.
