Those cold eyes
Frost comes from the soul. A historical novel from the bestselling author of When you see the sea.
War plays a cruel game of chess with people – pawns get mixed up, and the colour of the uniform does not matter much. During the Nazi occupation of Smolensk, charming Russian girl Neonila meets Emil, a young Czech forced to fight for the Wehrmacht. When they settle in Czechoslovakia after the war, the stigma of collaboration hangs over them, leaving them with no choice but to live a cautious life in fear. Can they keep their past a secret and, after everything they have experienced, look at the world with anything other than cold eyes? And can fear justify cruelty committed against others? Scarlett Wilková returns with her second novel, once again opening up a sensitive and rarely reflected topic of modern history.
