The Veil and the Jeans

The life stories of women living in Islam. Besides reportage, the book also contains more general reflections and personal memories. The authors include women originating directly from Islamic countries as well as Czech women, such as the well-known journalists P. Procházková and P. Jazairiová. One sphere in which the Western lifestyle differs significantly from the way of life in Islamic communities is the status of women. While in the West, which is based on the Judaeo-Christian tradition, women have achieved at least outward equality after a struggle lasting more than a hundred years, in Islamic countries their status remains fundamentally different from that of men. This collection of fourteen stories, compiled by the publicist M. Frouzová, shows what this difference entails. Besides reportage, the book also contains more general reflections and personal memories. The editor has tried to convey to the reader the characteristics of women's lives both in various Islamic states and in those where Muslims represent a minority (France, India, the Czech Republic).
