The funniest sad story
Hazel Grace, 14, has been living with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer for the past three years, and although it is uncertain how her condition will progress, she is not heading towards a cure. In the meantime, she has come to view her illness with a certain irony, and her biggest regret is that she will never know the outcome of her favourite book, The Emperor's Malady, which has an open ending. But then, at a support group meeting, she meets a charming young man, August Waters, who has managed to overcome his illness and shares her sarcastic outlook on life. Is there any point in falling in love if you have already accepted that your existence is a time bomb that will inevitably explode in the near future?
