The Sorrows of Young Werther

The story of a wretched, romantic young man who is hopelessly in love with Lotte, the wife of his friend. The work is partly autobiographical – in 1772, two years before the novel was published, Goethe went through a similar period, falling passionately in love with a woman who was at the time engaged to his friend. The text is based on the translation by Mária Klimová and has been minimally revised.
