The serpent's work
In a post-apocalyptic Paris destroyed by the mysterious Downpour, humanity tries to rebuild the world from the rubble. Among the survivors are people with a special ability to read unique signs, called synchronicities, in the chaos of everyday life. The most talented of them, the so-called Pythons, work as elite crime hunters for the new police force. Nathaniel Loppe, once the legendary Hunter, has retreated into seclusion after a personal tragedy. When a serial killer who is Python himself turns up, leaving no trace, Nathaniel returns to action at the urging of a younger, insecure colleague torn by a recent break-up. The thrilling search for the killer is intertwined with themes of chance and fate, synchronicities, quantum uncertainty and parallel worlds.
The Serpent's Work is a dark, atmospheric novel about the desire for revenge and the fragility of civilization. Norman Jangot offers a restless, "unclassifiable" story that combines genre entertainment with visionary reflection on the contemporary world.
