The Secret of the Brown Tower
At the beginning of the 18th century, the Habsburgs tried to consolidate their rule and stabilise the country, but at every step they met with fierce resistance from the local nobility, who refused to pay taxes and opposed imperial interference in the rights of the Hungarian aristocracy. In the case of the estates around Hričov Castle, this resistance also stemmed from the cruel crimes committed by the local nobility against their subjects. Is there any way for the victims to achieve justice?
The identity of the author, who hid under the pseudonym Čachtický, has not yet been revealed. Perhaps it was a coincidence, or the publisher's intention, but around the same time, Jožo Nižňanský also successfully dealt with the theme of the cruelty of the nobility in his novel, The Lady of Čachtice.
The text has been digitised from the 1938 edition, with minimal grammatical and stylistic changes.
