The Power of Regret

Non, rien de rien. Non, je ne regrette rien. No, nothing at all. No, I regret nothing at all. ...sings Edith Piaf in her famous chanson. But is it even possible to regret nothing? Everyone feels regret, explains Daniel H. Pink. The processes of regret are a universal and healthy part of being human. And understanding how regret works can help us make wiser decisions, perform better at work or in our studies, and bring greater meaning to our lives. Drawing on research in social psychology, neuroscience, and biology, the author debunks the myth of the "No Regrets" life philosophy. Using the largest-ever sample of American attitudes towards regret and his own World Regret Survey – which has collected regrets from more than 15,000 people in 105 countries – he identifies four core regrets that are common to all of us. As in his bestsellers (Drive, When, and A Whole New Mind), Pink offers a dynamic new way of thinking about regret, framing his ideas in a clear and pragmatic way. The Power of Regret is full of real-life stories from people who regret something in their lives, as well as practical tips on how to reframe regret as a positive force, showing how we can live richer, more courageous lives thanks to this unpopular emotion.
