The Pigeon House
Once upon a time, there was a house in Pilsen. And a girl...
At the turn of the 20th century, Pilsen was experiencing a period of unprecedented growth. The city was expanding with new districts, factories were being built, and people from the countryside were flocking in for work. Tensions between Czech and German patriots were soon joined by calls for better working conditions. With the outbreak of the First World War, Pilsen became an important armaments centre, and the discontent of its inhabitants culminated in hunger riots and strikes.
Amidst this turbulent world grows Julie Šetnerová – in wealth, in a grand villa, with her hypochondriac, self-absorbed mother and distant father. Julie is intelligent but emotionally barren, without a shred of compassion for others. When she discovers who her real father is, she ruthlessly interferes in the lives of her step-siblings, determined to destroy everything they hold dear.
Feeling wronged, Julie continues to yearn for acceptance and vindication until fate deals her a harsh lesson. What high price will she have to pay for her mistakes? And can anything be fixed at all? ___ From the author of the successful book Smíchov Stories.
Marie Rejfová
She is from Prague, grew up in Žatec, and studied at the Faculty of Humanities in Pilsen. She now lives in Varnsdorf, where she works as a nursery school teacher. She has been writing fiction since she was young. After two fantasy novels for young adults, she focused on a series of humorous detective stories featuring the quirky teacher Josefína Divíšková, in which she fully utilised her talent for observing and describing relationships between ordinary people with a fitting dose of humour, while skilfully conveying the atmosphere of a contemporary small town. She is also the author of a collection of brilliant arabesques, Smíchov Stories, which are an acknowledged tribute to Jan Neruda and Jakub Arbes, and The Dove House, a multi-generational novel set in Pilsen at the turn of the 20th century.
