The little girl from the stamp
The president's gesture has gone around the republic
The story of Eva Haňková, known from the First Republic stamp with President Masaryk, in an accessible story for children.
Does the name Eva Haňková mean anything to you? In the First Republic, everyone knew her! Eva was the "stamp girl" whom President Masaryk lifted into the air and embraced during his visit to Pardubice, and from this gesture one could feel such joy and optimism of the young republic that the postage stamp with the photo of the girl and TGM was sold in millions of copies and Eva became a celebrity of sorts. But times changed quickly, the war and the communist coup came and the "little girl from the stamp", now an emancipated and university-educated young woman, stopped breathing freely in Czechoslovakia. Together with her husband, she emigrated to the USA because she longed for a life of freedom. The story ends symbolically with a meeting with another president, Václav Havel, again in a free country. The author introduces children to Czech history of the 20th century in an accessible way.
