The little fart
The Little Prince and Ostrava? Fajne jak cyp! The Little Prince has been on many journeys. This time, he's heading to the Ostrava region!
Kura šak ve slevarně tež muže robit knihomol, ne? A aj ten haviř raz za čas zvedne palu ke hvězdam, bo kusek maleho prynca je v každem z nas. Posluchajte, ty Exuperyho dřysty su fajne, to ne že ne. Enem jim chybi taky ten ostravsky šarm. Tož zme mu to krapet pošolichali, aby byli naši synci a děvuchy hrdi, že ma ostravština dalši zařez do světove literatury. Šak maly prync přece tež sfaral! Akorat ne do dolu, ale z nebe na zem. Věřime, že se nad tim budete šťuřit jak ta pryncova liška. A dyž ne? Tak chuj s tym!
The iconic book by French writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has been translated into more than 350 languages and dialects. Everyone knows it. Martina Dlabajová, an enthusiastic collector of editions of The Little Prince whose collection currently includes hundreds of different versions, had long been thinking about how to translate the gentle story into the harsh Ostrava dialect. She was helped with this difficult task by Ostrava-born copywriter Martin Müller, and as he himself says, the dialect of the steel city is "rough on the surface like sand, but lovely deep inside".
The work is accompanied by imaginative drawings by Alžběta Štenclová, an illustrator and author who has lived in the region since she was a child and has a close connection to the local culture, language, and people. In 2024, she debuted with her authorial book Kratke zobaky, an illustrated dictionary of the Ostrava dialect.
Martin Müller
Martin Müller (* 1988) is a writer, marketer, and advertising copywriter born in Ostrava. He came to translate The Little Prince via a rather unconventional route – through writing copy for billboards that have lined the streets of his hometown for years. In addition to this book, he has also penned the historical novel The Black Rusalka (2022), in which a Soviet major and a Czech border guard clash over a glassmaking treasure, and he is preparing a thriller, The Debt Collector (2025), about a debt collector from the 90s, written based on true crime stories. He has won two awards for his advertising copy in the Czech Republic and three in Great Britain.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer and aviator. He was born in Lyon in 1900 and was fascinated by the world of aeroplanes from a young age. As a pilot, he was employed by several airlines and flew on various routes. He transformed his experiences into several captivating literary works. After the start of the Second World War, he entered military service with the rank of captain at the Toulouse airfield. According to witnesses, he was one of the bravest. He died tragically in July 1944 during a flight from Corsica; the wreckage of his plane was found in 2000 in the Mediterranean Sea near Marseille.
