The Doctor's Daughter
Auschwitz 1941.
The Nazis occupy Poland, and a young woman named Sofie cannot look her own father in the eye. This is because her mother – his adored wife – is Jewish. So how can her father be so willing to cooperate with the Germans?
It is the dead of night when Izak and his fellow unfortunates step off the train. Soldiers point their guns at them from all sides, between fences topped with barbed wire, deciding the prisoners’ fate on the spot. Izak is one of those sent to work, not straight to his death.
Every day, Izak and several other prisoners travel to work at a nearby farm, where they toil on the frozen soil from dawn until dusk. He feels as though every breath could be his last, but when he sees a beautiful girl with chestnut hair in the window, it feels like a dream.
Sofie refuses to accept what she is seeing. Disobeying her father, she smuggles a message to the young man with green eyes whom she sees under her window every day, telling him where she has hidden food and that she will try to help them all.
This fleeting encounter gives Izak new hope for the life of freedom he thought was lost forever, but it also brings him a lifelong love. But how can love survive in the face of such evil? Do Izak and Sofie even have a chance at a life together when they find themselves hiding underground with the Germans on their heels?
