The fact-based novel The Genie Generation tells the story of a tragic event in Georgia's not-so-distant history
On 18 November 1983, a group of young people attempted to hijack an Aeroflot plane bound from Tbilisi to Leningrad. Their goal was to force a landing in Turkey and escape the hopeless life in the Soviet Union. The kidnapping failed, claiming several innocent victims, and its organizers did not escape exemplary punishments. The opinion about their actions still divides Georgian society today, similarly to the case of the escape of the Mašín brothers. However, the story of the kidnappers in jeans, as told by Datha Turashvili, has a huge readership not only in Georgia but also in many Western countries.
