A Landmark Monograph on the History of the Protectorate
The book was first published in Czech in 1999. For the current edition, the author has substantially revised it, adding approximately one hundred manuscript pages, in which he has taken into account the development of knowledge on the subject up to the present day and corrected his conclusions on some specific aspects.
Professor Detlef Brandes, a well-known and universally respected German historian specialising in, among other things, Czech-German relations in the 20th century, captures the complete history of the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in his work. Based on a detailed study of both Czech and German sources, he provides a factually rich synthesis of German occupation policy, Czech collaboration and resistance, as well as all aspects of public life in Bohemia and Moravia between 1939 and 1945. The more reserved he is in his explicit evaluations, the more the facts presented speak for themselves. The monographic nature of the work, as well as the breadth and depth of its treatment of the subject, is unparalleled in either Czech or German literature.
It is prized by German and Czech historians for its extraordinary objectivity and remains unsurpassed as a seminal work. Its significance is further underlined by the author's exceptional contribution to the current, third Czech edition of the work.
