The Case of the Dead Lord
A locked room becomes the scene of a seemingly impossible murder...
Gambling debts have brought Lord Redmire to the brink of bankruptcy. In an attempt to raise money to pay them off, he decides to stage a spectacular magic show and perform a difficult locked-room illusion, which will also be broadcast live on television. But not long after the cameras start rolling, the spectacular trick goes spectacularly wrong.
Inspector Jim Oldroyd, watching the performance from the front row, has never seen anything like it in his entire police career. Lord Redmire disappears right before his eyes, only to reappear moments later with a knife in his back. Oldroyd and his colleague, Sergeant Stephanie Johnson, soon discover that almost everyone in the audience at the time had a motive for the murder. But how did the killer manage to get into the locked room and out again without leaving a single trace?
After the only person who knew the secret behind the illusion is brutally silenced, the case begins to seem unsolvable. The question is not only who committed the murder, but also why and, above all, how.
J. R. Ellis
He comes from a working-class family, but that didn't stop him from graduating from Oxford University and becoming a teacher. He has always been interested in mysteries, the supernatural, and unsolved crimes, and even during his teaching years, he wrote children's plays and ghost stories. However, it was only in retirement that he began to devote himself fully to writing. His Yorkshire Murder Mystery series is inextricably linked with the county where Ellis lives. He was inspired by the locked-room mystery style of detectives by Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr, and also by the series Jonathan Creek. He believes that for detective novels, it's not just important who committed the crime, but also how they did it. Although he writes about murder, he avoids overly brutal scenes, preferring to emphasise a light style, elements of humour, and a well-thought-out plot.
Read by Filip Jančík
He started out as an actor but decided to devote himself fully to voice-over work. That's why we can only see him in a handful of films or series. As a young actor, he appeared in films such as Záhada hlavolamu and Vekslák aneb staré zlaté časy. In contrast, Filip Jančík's voice is instantly recognisable, for example, on the TV channel Prima Cool or in an impressive number of Hollywood films and series.
