The Cartographer's Daughter
A wonderful historical story set in the 16th century about a remarkable and brave woman – a cartographer, inspired by true events. And also the story of a modern-day woman who, with bated breath, discovers this long-lost world of maps, which also reflect human lives.
Robyn’s world fell apart when her beloved husband Nate disappeared into the sea waves seven years ago. She left bustling London for the peaceful hometown of Hay-on-Wye, where her father owns a small book and map shop. In it, Robyn discovers a mysterious, unusually detailed map. She decides to investigate its origin and the mysterious story that surrounds it. Little does she know that the map – as maps often do – will show her the right way.
Freida, a Protestant, comes from a prominent Dutch family of cartographers. As a child, she experienced the hell unleashed in the 16th century by the hatred between Catholics and Protestants. To save herself, she fled from the Netherlands to London, where she tries to live a new life and apply her skills in map engraving. Word of her soon reaches Queen Elizabeth, who asks her to create the most detailed map the world has ever seen for the famous navigator Francis Drake. Freida thus finds herself at the royal court, where she makes an enemy of the Spanish envoy. This sets off a whirlwind of dangerous adventures that once again threaten Freida’s entire family.
