The Age of Menhirs in Bohemia
Menhirs are artificially erected stones and a manifestation of so-called megalithic culture. Alongside myths and legends, there are numerous expert and amateur theories about their purpose, mission, and the era they were erected. Some researchers see them as cult sites, others as prehistoric astronomical observatories and calendars, and still others as places with a concentration of exceptionally strong “earth energy” or markers for the course of “dragon veins.” There are even opinions that they are indirect evidence of ancient contact with extraterrestrial civilisations. Everyone is likely familiar with England's Stonehenge or Brittany's Carnac, but standing stones—whether isolated, in groups, or as part of megalithic structures—can be found on every continent except Antarctica. In the first part of the book, the reader will visit the most famous and lesser-known sites in Europe, America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
There are also a number of standing stones in the Czech Republic, which some researchers label as prehistoric menhirs, while others disagree. The book will take the reader to 115 sites in Bohemia where these mysterious stones, stone rows, circles, and dolmens are located, to another 11 sites where the stones can no longer be seen because they have disappeared, and to 20 places with stones and circles erected in recent decades, mostly by followers of Neo-Druidism and psychotronics. The text is supplemented by over 280 photographs, maps, plans, drawings, and other illustrations, and the book can also serve as a tourist guide for visiting the individual locations.
