The afterlife of Mal Caldera
When not even death can break the bond between sisters
Mal Caldera – a former rock star who only recently hung up her wild ways, the black sheep of a Catholic family – has just died. Which doesn't particularly bother her personally; after all, she's flirted with death more than once. The only thing that worries her is how her younger sister, Cris, will cope. At all costs, she must let her know that she didn't do it on purpose this time, that she didn't mean to leave her so suddenly, that she wasn't that selfish. Which is the main reason why, unlike the vast majority of ghosts she's encountered so far, Mal isn't cutting a rug in some spectral ballroom, but instead searching for a way to connect with Cris. A reluctant and shy medium, a young man named Ren, might be able to help her. But the more time they spend together, the more they wonder what it would have been like if they had met sooner, when they both still had bodies of their own... But interfering in the world of the living can be extremely dangerous for both ghosts and people.
Nadi Reed Perez
Nadi Reed Perez creates and writes the fantasy literature podcast The Call of the Flame. She lives near Denver with a growing clowder of cats and, apparently, a handful of ghosts. In her debut novel, The Afterlife of Mal Caldera (2024), she touches upon family and relationship traumas, which often take a lifetime to heal, with perspective and empathy. It is a great mystery how Nadi Reed Perez has managed to combine so many intense human emotions in this imaginative and sexy novel about the afterlife, and to suggest a path for all those who feel too lonely, too different in the world.
