Teacher from Auschwitz - Fredy Hirsch

He died when hope died. My name was Alfred Hirsch, but my friends called me Fredy. I was twenty-eight years old. I was a teacher. I was a dreamer. Please remember my name. There is no one left alive who can testify to how and why my life was extinguished. Fredy (Alfred) Hirsch (1916-1944), a gifted athlete, teacher and member of the Jewish scout movement, was born in Aachen and emigrated to Prague in the 1930s, where he led a Jewish youth sports club. In 1941, he was deported to Terezín and then to Auschwitz, where he helped establish a children's block where children were at least partially protected from the horrors of the surrounding area. He died under unclear circumstances in March 1944. It happened on the eve of one of the largest mass executions of Czechoslovak citizens, when it was in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. He was helping children survive!
