Tales from the Vinyl Age

Opening the paper sleeve, smelling the record, carefully placing it on the platter, and starting the spin…

Vinyl is a ticket to another world. Anyone who has fallen under its spell knows that it is not only associated with all sorts of rituals, but also establishes a whole specific culture.

What was the very first Czech one like? How is playing records related to radio broadcasting? Who organised illegal record fairs? And why is the record making a comeback in the age of digital technology?

In his book, Radek Diestler pays tribute to a phenomenon that has shaped entire generations of fans, but which has not yet received focused attention in our country. The vinyl record is not only the most important medium for preserving music in human history. It is also an artistic artefact, a cult object, a valuable item, and last but not least, a magnet for stories.

Radek Diestler (1972) writes about music and history, but he also writes about ice hockey and beer culture. He founded the Popmuseum and has been contributing to music magazines since the early 1990s; among other things, he was a core writer for Rock & Pop magazine. He collaborates with Radio Beat. He has published books about the bands Tři sestry and Našrot, a history of the rock scene in West Bohemia called Marshally nadoraz (2019), the guidebook Praha beatová (2023), and a monograph on the 1990s in Czech popular music, Dekáda naplno (2023).
