Tales from the Folder
In the book's introduction, Elo Šándor speaks of the bleak situation during the Second World War: “‘Tales from the Drawer’ were born between 1937 and 1944. Some of them, especially those written before 1938, saw the light of day in print, but most of them remained tucked away in a desk drawer, waiting for a possible police raid, or perhaps one day – in a liberated homeland – to be published in a collection. After many experiences, our countrymen must always reckon with the possibility of being picked up by the ÚŠB or the Gestapo…” Despite this, an exceptional collection was created, which, in a bittersweetly comical way, portrays the situation in Slovakia during those turbulent times. The book has been digitised from the original 1946 edition, with only minimal edits made.
