SYLLOGE NUMMORUM GRAECORUM CZECH REPUBLIC
Jiří Militký (in cooperation with Jiří Kmošek and Petr Veselý): Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Czech Republic. Ptolemaic Empire, Egypt and North Africa. National Museum, Prague. 277 pages.
The new volume of the Czech series of the worldwide edition Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum makes another part of the collection of ancient coins from the Numismatic Department of the National Museum accessible and presents the coinage of ancient Egypt.
It includes a total of 846 pieces, including 250 coins from the rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty from Ptolemy I to Cleopatra VII, and more modestly represented coinage from other North African regions including Zeugitana, Cyrenaica, Numidia and Mauretania. However, the most numerous, with more than 500 pieces, are the provincial coins of Alexandria in Egypt, i.e. coins minted during the period of Roman rule over Egypt. The publication thus loosely follows on from the catalogue of Egyptian provincial coins from the Luboš Král collection, published in 2021 as part of the same series. The chronologically arranged catalogue is traditionally supplemented by both black-and-white photographs of the coins in their original size and their colour enlargements. The catalogue is extended by a chapter devoted to the measurements and results of X-ray fluorescence analyses of selected coins.
The printed version of the publication will be released in February of this year.
