During the political trials of the 1950s, the wife of stonemason František Hošek wishes he would change his job. Ideally, he should become a prosecutor, a judge, or some other servant of the regime. František doesn't resist at first and tries his hand at being an investigator, where he becomes disgusted by the practices he witnesses. Later, as a guard in a women's prison, he understands not only the absurdity of the entire state apparatus but, most importantly, thanks to a prisoner named Kristýna, he realises what he has been missing in life as a father of two. Kristýna, along with his daughter Verunka, who loves to express her thoughts in poems, opens up a different, more colourful world for him, but one that can be shattered at any moment under a totalitarian regime.
