Such good fortune
A family saga about love, injustice, and happiness that never comes for free
The year is 1946, and the poor, eccentric Lipka unexpectedly marries the heir to the wealthiest farm in the region. The village is astonished, but behind this "great fortune" lies a cruel bargain with fate. However, this is only the beginning of a chain of misfortunes. With the rise of communism, the lives of farming families are shattered—property disappears, families fall apart, and those who remain must learn to survive. In the harsh borderlands of the Jeseníky mountains, far from everything she ever knew, Lipka starts over. With children who are not her own, and a past that clings to her like bad luck. Scarlett Wilková paints a picture of the post-war Czech countryside crushed by collectivisation, and the quiet resilience of a woman who was lucky in her misfortune. Or was it the other way around?
Scarlett Wilková
Scarlett Wilková is a writer and journalist who has dedicated herself to writing since she joined the editorial team of a company magazine in Ostrava after graduating from secondary school. She has since worked for various media outlets, and for the last twenty years, she has primarily written for Magazín DNES, where she focuses on interviews and topics related to social trends. She has collaborated with the Post Bellum organisation, which runs the Memory of Nations database. For them, she recorded the memories of Greek witnesses, which inspired her successful literary debut, When You See the Sea. This was followed by novels predominantly exploring themes of Czech wartime and post-war history. With her book They Called Her Kri-kri, she returned to her beloved Greece, and in her latest novel, Such Great Fortune, she captures the impact of post-war trauma, extreme drought, and the onset of communist totalitarianism on the Czech countryside.
