Strata
A novel older than Discworld
Strata, as in layers. A novel in which Terry Pratchett first explores the idea of a flat world – long before his famous Discworld was created. For now, we are in the science fiction genre, but the author is already pondering the origins of the universe, civilisations, and reality itself with his typical heresy and wit.
A crew composed of three beings from different races sets out on a journey to uncover the greatest secret of all time, and their expedition is as adventurous as it is subversive. Pratchett combines humour, philosophy, and ideas that would later mature in his most famous books. After thirty years, this remarkable title returns to Czech readers, showing the author on the verge of his greatest discoveries.
Terry Pratchett
Terry Pratchett (1948–2015) was a British writer, a master of irony, and an observer of the human world with a gift for combining hyperbole, intelligent humour, and profound humanism. Tens of millions of copies of his books have been sold worldwide and translated into more than thirty languages. Although he gained the greatest fame for his Discworld series, whose fantasy world became a mirror of our reality, Pratchett's literary roots lie in the science fiction genre. The novels The Dark Side of the Sun (1981) and Strata (1981) represent the author's early, experimental work, in which his distinctive style is already clearly evident – a combination of playful imagination, precise logic, and subtle, often biting humour. Pratchett is among the most significant British authors of the second half of the 20th century, and his work connects readers of all generations.
