Stigma and self-stigma in psychiatric disorders

Patients suffering from psychiatric disorders face daily not only the symptoms of their illness, but also discrimination related to stigmatising attitudes and social behaviour. The monograph focuses on an important psychosocial aspect of the suffering of these people.
Another burden is the internalized stigma that contributes to the poorer psychological state of the mentally ill and to the lower effectiveness of the therapy they undergo. The publication shows how the process of stigmatization and the process of internalization of stigma takes place, discusses the impact of these processes on the identification and diagnosis of psychological problems, on the social situation of patients and on treatment and rehabilitation approaches. It also seeks to show ways in which stigma or self-stigmatisation can be reduced at a societal level, in prevention, in the education of professionals and in treatment. The publication is intended for professionals working with people with mental disorders, students of helping professions and the general public interested in the stigma of mental disorders.
