Stephen Leacock's humorous short stories II
Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) was a Canadian humorist and university teacher of political economy at McGill University in Montreal. He became especially famous for his humorous short stories, of which he wrote more than two dozen books. In them, he focuses on ordinary life situations, which he drives to absurd ends. Although he is probably Canada's best-known writer, his birthplace is in England. The family moved to Canada when he was six years old. He has been writing humorous short stories, sketches and feuilletons since his university studies. It was not until 1910 that he published in book form and became very well known. His humorous work, which consists of more than twenty collections of short stories, has been repeatedly published and translated into many languages around the world (his book Literární poklesky appeared in Czech with a significant delay only in 1963, but it has been published in many other editions since then). If anyone in the audience visits Toronto, Canada, they can visit the Leacock Museum. He will find it at the point where two lakes touch, charming with their Indian names and natural beauty. The writer built his house there, where he also died on 28 March 1944. He is buried in the family grave on the opposite bank at the Church of St. George at a place called Sibbald Point. The museum organizes exhibitions dedicated to individual writers, summer schools and writing courses, and literary festivals.
