Tension is brewing between the mages and the Chantry. After the bloody suppression of the mage uprising, the mages are essentially imprisoned in the White Spire, the heart of templar power. However, this fragile balance is suddenly and irrevocably shattered. A mysterious, invisible killer is stalking the corridors of the Spire, picking off the mages one by one. To make matters worse, a failed assassination attempt is made on the Divine, the head of the Chantry. Suspicion falls upon, among others, the mage Rhys, the only one who knows the identity of the mages' true killer. To prove he has nothing to do with the assassination or the murders, and to dispel speculation that he practises dangerous blood magic, Rhys reluctantly joins an expedition into the Western Wastes. There, he not only uncovers more than he bargained for but also changes the fate of all mages forever.
