Third case for Kate Burkholder
The Slabaughs are a straight up model Amish farm family, hard working, with four children and a great relationship with their extended family. The idyll ends when one of their children calls for help. Kate Burkholder, the police chief of Painters Mill, discovers the boy's parents and uncle, all dead, in a manure tank.
Initially, all indications are that it was an unfortunate accident, but during a routine autopsy, the coroner discovers that one of the victims suffered a blow to the head before dying. It's obvious that there's been a murder. No one wants to track down the killer as much as Kate, who also grew up in an Amish family, so she takes the case somewhat personally...
