When a young single man hires a servant, he usually assumes that this will make his life easier. However, if he finds a butler like Saturnin, he can be sure to be part of a wild and unstoppable ride that won't let him breathe for a moment. Saturnin's novel approach to problem solving is the source of absurd and amusing plots. He is resourceful, stubborn, fierce and devious, which makes him both invaluable and dangerous to those around him.

Jirotka's novel Saturnin was first published in 1942. It is characterised not only by humour but also by a satirical view of social norms and behaviour. To this day, it still appeals to a wide range of readers with its casual yet sophisticated humorous exaggeration and brilliantly drawn characters. It has become not only a cult work of Czech literature, but also an inspiration for film and theatre adaptations.
