Punctuation express
The main purpose of the book Interpunkce expres (Punctuation Express) is to provide a comprehensive overview of the basic rules for using punctuation marks, which help us to better navigate a text. They make it easy to find the end of a sentence or direct speech. We can understand whether a sentence is a simple statement, a question, a command, a wish or an exclamation. We can recognise when it's a form of address, an expression of emotion or a clarification of information. The book is therefore intended primarily for primary school pupils (especially Key Stage 2 and above) and secondary school students, but also for teachers, parents and the general public. The book consists of ten chapters, each dedicated to a different punctuation mark. In the very first chapter on writing full stops, you'll see just how difficult it is to read and understand a continuous text that isn't divided into individual sentences by these marks. We don't just use full stops at the end of sentences, but also after ordinal numbers, dates and times, which you will also get to practise. This is followed by chapters on question marks, exclamation marks, colons, quotation marks (i.e. direct speech), brackets, dashes and semicolons. The largest section is then devoted to the use of commas, both in simple sentences and in more complex compound sentences. Each chapter is followed by a series of exercises to consolidate your knowledge. The final chapter provides a summary review to test how well you have mastered punctuation. At the end, there is a table with an overview of all the rules for writing punctuation marks. A key to all the exercises is, of course, included, and there are also indicative year group markings for each chapter and exercise. The book is also suitable for preparing for entrance exams.
