Interview of Karel Hvížďala with Pavel Landovský
The book interview between Karel Hvíždala and Pavel Landovský was written almost forty years ago, when both authors were still in exile. Karel Hvížďala recalls in the afterword how Pavel Landovský arrived in Bonn and immediately occupied our entire house. He cooked for everybody, didn't let anybody into the kitchen, took care of everybody in his own way, sharpened knives on the stairs not only for us, but for almost the whole street. He could talk for hours, played, jumping on chairs, rolling around on the ground, He made a face, he was changing, pulling at his suspenders.
There was an unforgettable production in front of the audience, whom I drove from the surrounding area to have an audience, and they still remember it. Fortunately, the actor's colourful speech has been translated into written language and we can once again remember an extraordinary and charismatic personality not only of the Czech theatre. It is easy to love Landy, but it was sometimes more difficult to endure his wry and uncompromising humour, which uncompromisingly exposed every hypocrisy. Pavel Landovský became an acting legend during his lifetime, but he was something more to those around him - a cheerful and reliable friend, a great storyteller with an unforgettable philosophy of life.
