A chilling tale from a time when the Šumava mountains were engulfed by blood-red snow
A story inspired by one of the greatest natural and human disasters in the Šumava mountains. In April 1853, the remote settlements below Huťský Štít await the arrival of spring. In vain. All they get are blizzards that bury everything and everyone. And also hunger, an unknown epidemic, horror, and madness. Some choose death, while others renounce their own humanity in the fight for survival. The echo of that long-ago tragedy is still passed down by the descendants of one of the families, while a terrible legacy awaits its unveiling.
The novel, which honours both the horror and detective genres, tells an ancient story of the battle between good and evil, and forgiveness versus hatred. A story of fear and misunderstanding passed down from father to son. At least until the one who has no right even to a name in a man's world—She—enters the scene.
The ability to illuminate the Czech periphery as a space of unease, shifting identities, and unprocessed traumas, while the rest of the nation is still obsessed with Biedermeier-esque peace and quiet for work, culminating in duck for Sunday lunch, makes Petra Klabouchová a personality who has long been missing from the fragmented tradition of Czech horror.
- Jarmila Křenková on the novel Ignis Fatuus, Seznam Zprávy
An old short story by Klostermann and a memorial plaque on the wall of a chapel in Cimruky, commemorating a long-ago tragedy, led me to the trail of a forgotten story from the very peaks of the Šumava mountains. Just as I searched for fragments of those old stories, I let the reader slowly glimpse into the secret history of old grievances. And to search within it for an answer to the question of whether the predetermined thread of fate can be broken.
