Pragmatics in Czech

From the perspective of the Czech language, this monograph deals with phenomena for which the collective term “pragmatics” has become established in linguistics. Compared to the first edition, it contains a newly defined theoretical standpoint (so-called moderate pragmatics) and newly conceived thematic areas. For the first time in the Czech language, the issue of temporal and spatial deixis is addressed. Within the chapter on speech acts, the essence of so-called performativity is newly discussed, and the theory of implicatures also considers topics presented for the first time in Czech linguistics. Attention is also paid to new developments in the theory of (im)politeness and metapragmatics. The topics are arranged in such a way that the perspectives on pragmatic phenomena build upon each other in a meaningful and layered manner. This is the first and, to date, the only systematic pragmatics of the Czech language in Czech linguistics.
