Power
The first book in the cult series The Faithful and the Fallen from acclaimed fantasy author John Gwynne
Young Corban watches with envy as boys become men and learn the art of war. He longs to hold a sword and spear to protect his king's land. But that day comes sooner than he expects. Only when he loses those he loves does he discover the true price of courage.
The history of the Banished Lands is filled with bloody clashes between the armies of men and giants, where the earth has been blackened by their shed blood. Although the giant clans were defeated long ago, their conquered fortresses still stand throughout the land. But now the giants are reawakening, stones weep blood, and even giant wyrms have appeared. Those who can still read the signs see a threat coming, far greater than the ancient wars. Grief will shroud the world, and angels and demons will prepare for the battlefield. Then a war to end all wars will break out.
King Aquilus summons the other kings to a council to form an alliance in this urgent time. Prophecy says that both darkness and light will have their champions — the Black Sun and the Bright Star. It would be wise to find them both, for if the Black Sun manages to ascend the throne, all the hopes and dreams of humanity will turn to dust.
What they wrote about the book:
A series that promises the same level of complexity and depth as Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time or George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.
- Library Journal
If you as a reader enjoy complex, well-constructed, and utterly immersive grimdark fantasy, then Malice is the ideal choice for you.
- Grimdark Magazine
The novel provided me with an immersive reading experience similar to those offered to me over the past three decades by David Gemmell, Raymond E. Feist, George R. R. Martin and — of course — J. R. R. Tolkien. And for these authors, as for John Gwynne, I will be forever grateful.
- Fantasy Book Review
The magic of Gwynne's mastery lies in the fact that while he doesn't pull any punches, and the plot rushes forward from one fight to the next — the text also holds, like hidden gems, the secrets of how the whole world works, which must be uncovered.
