Pain in medicine

The book is the 14th collection of papers presented at another conference on ethics and communication in medicine, which has been organized annually by the Czech Medical Chamber since 2011. The fourteenth conference in December 2024 focused on pain in medicine.

The monograph contains 39 texts by 46 authors. Individual contributions are divided into six blocks: Pain from the perspective of clinical disciplines, Pain from the perspective of psychology and psychotherapy, Pain through the eyes of ethics, bioethics and biology, Pain through the eyes of theology, Pain from the perspective of legal sciences and Pain from the perspective of journalism. Central theme – pain in medicine and especially methods of relieving physical pain – required a significant representation of authors from clinical disciplines. Other authors also reflected on the existence of internal, mental pain, on the meaning and purpose of pain in human life, and on its communicative and social dimension.

The series of monographs and follow-up conferences on the topic of ethics and communication in medicine is unparalleled in our country or in the world in terms of the breadth and continuity of such educational activities for the medical and wider public. Proceedings become a source of information, stimuli for discussions, a basis for diploma, bachelor' s and doctoral theses, and material for teaching ethics at medical faculties and nursing schools; they are often listed as required or recommended reading. They contribute significantly to the cultivation of the broadest medical public, and their editors received the award from the Rector of Charles University (Bedřich Hrozný Award) for the best creative achievement of 2017.
