Ödön von Horváth: The Divorce of Figaro
In his play The Divorce of Figaro (1936), Ödon von Horváth imagines and plays out the fates of the heroes of Beaumarchais' The Marriage of Figaro. However, he sets them in his own present - as turbulent as pre-revolutionary France, but a bit more harsh and raw. One decade of Horváth's short life, the years 1926 to 1936, belongs to his dramatic work. A globetrotter and by nature a "European" who, in his own words, "never had a homeland and never suffered from it," he said of his work: I'm not writing against, I'm just pointing out. However, I also never write pro, so it can come across as con. There are only two things I write against, and that is stupidity and lying. And the two that I stand for are reason and honesty. Persons and cast: Count Almaviva (Jiří Adamíra), Countess, his wife (Jana Štěpánková), Figaro (Boris Rösner), Susan, his wife (Jana Paulová), forest adjunct (Pavel Trávníček), midwife (Nina Divíšková), directing teacher + guide (Radim Vašinka), Antonio (Sobeslav Sejk), Fanchetta, his daughter (Tatiana Medvecka), Pedrillo (Michal Pavlata), Constable (Miroslav Wednesday), Commissioner (Jiri Halek), Cherub (Pavel Soukup), Guest (Miroslav Moravec), officer (Bořivoj Navrátil) and others.
