Nine circles
In the autumn of 1939, Hitler's machinery of power in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia is only just beginning to wind up for a series of decisive blows against the resistance of the local population. It desperately needs the advanced Czech armaments factories and their workers for its war industry. It finds a pretext to intimidate the Czech population in the suppression of the student demonstration after the funeral of student Jan Opletal, which it also connects to the closure of Czech universities. The occupying administration has no interest in the minds of the Czech elites; it is only interested in the strength of the workers' muscles. As hostages to maintain the obedience of the Czech nation, it interns one thousand two hundred Czech students in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
Among them is Bruno Hradec, one of the heroes of the novel 'Two Went, He Went Alone'. Its loose sequel, 'The Nine Circles', deals with a relatively unknown part of Czech history, which for the heroes resembles Dante's nine circles of Hell, that is, the nine circles of suffering for sinful souls through which Dante and the poet Virgil proceed to Purgatory. How will the young students cope with the hell of the concentration camp, and how many of them will manage to return home to their families?
