Murders in the spa
Inspector Jim Oldroyd investigates the murder of a writer who scripted his own death...
The popular crime fiction festival takes place every year in the North English town of Harrogate. This time, however, the proceedings are disrupted by an incident straight out of an Agatha Christie novel – the body of famous author Damian Penrose is found in the town's spa. The murderer has coldly strangled the writer and vanished without a trace.
The only person who can solve the mystery is DCI Jim Oldroyd. With the help of his team, he quickly discovers that while Penrose may have been popular with readers, he had made a number of enemies among his fellow writers due to royalty disputes, accusations of plagiarism and affairs with their wives. But was one of his embittered rivals capable of killing him?
When a second murder occurs, it becomes clear to Oldroyd that he is up against a cold-blooded criminal settling old scores. Can he track them down before someone else dies?
A classic English detective story in the style of modern masters of the genre such as Ann Granger, Caroline Graham and Louise Penny.
J. R. Ellis
J. R. Ellis comes from a working-class family, but that didn't stop him from graduating from Oxford University and becoming a teacher. He has always been interested in mysteries, the supernatural and unsolved crimes, and during his teaching years he wrote children's plays and ghost stories. However, it was not until his retirement that he began to devote himself fully to writing. His Yorkshire Murder Mystery series is intrinsically linked to the county where Ellis lives. He was inspired by the locked-room mystery style of detectives by Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr, and also by the TV series Jonathan Creek. He believes that for detective novels, it's not just who committed the crime that matters, but also how they did it. Although he writes about murder, he avoids overly brutal scenes, preferring to emphasise a light style, elements of humour and a well-thought-out plot.
