At dawn, a young couple lie on their backs beside a dying fire. They are holding hands and their eyes are open, but their bodies are already cold.
When a park ranger stumbles upon the bodies of Valerie and Tyler Yates in the woods, Detective Josie Quinn suspects there's more to it than just an accidental poisoning. The autopsy confirms her suspicions – a pendant had been roughly forced down Valerie's throat before she died.
While searching the area, Josie's team discovers a third sleeping bag, suggesting that someone else might have been at the fire that night. Was it an unknown missing victim? Or a suspect on the run? Could it be the woman who, a short while later, ran out of the woods and straight into the path of Josie's car? The clues lead Josie to places hidden deep in the forest – to intertwined caves and an off-the-grid farm where people go to hide, and where they meet a young girl with terrified eyes and bandaged wrists who knows more than she is letting on. The next day, however, she is found dead. With an identical pendant… Josie must figure out the meaning of the deadly ornament and catch the twisted killer before another innocent person loses their life. Or is it already too late and darkness will consume everything?
