Lake

The award-winning story of a boy who was determined to sink to the bottom

A fishing village somewhere at the dirty end of the world is a place where old myths die and new ones are born. The pale figure of the Ghost of the Lake still shines through the rough coating of socialist order, awaiting the next victims. Where did Nami's mother go? And what happened to the father? All that was left was Grandma and Grandpa and an unknown, hostile world beyond the arid horizon. And it is to him that Nami must surrender, to grow up, to understand, to find his own voice. The story of a hero - a boy who had to lose everything to find himself. A story of a devastated landscape, wounded people and a lake full of poisons, but at the bottom of which hope may still lie.

They wrote about the book Jezero

Nami is reminiscent of the hero from Kosiński's The Painted Bird or the Sigurd characters from Jáchym Topol's prose. However, Bianca Bell's unsentimental, brutal and yet somehow motherly animal vision and concept is completely original and encountering it brings an unusual reading experience.

Jiří Peňás, critic and publicist

Sometimes when you start reading a new book, after a few pages you realize that it's that rare occasion when you're reading something special. And this is the case. Pretty tough case. And then with every page you read, you find out otherwise. The lake is even better than you thought a moment ago. And much rougher.

John P. Muchow, musician

Clearly written, lucid, sensitive and yet unpleasant. I was impressed with the setting, the main character and the other characters, including the bad guys, I just believed them all. Thank you Mrs. Bell for your encouragement, I hope to read something Czech from time to time.
