K. M. Čapek-Chour

Representative of Czech literary naturalism. A journalist, a relentless critic and a novelist of powerful gesture. "Am I free of all imagination except reproductive? " said the writer Karel Matěj Čapek, who added the nickname Chod to distinguish his name from his more famous (and younger) namesake. His incisive ability to faithfully reproduce any literary character made him a respected, if often criticized, classic in his mature years. Naturalism, raw literary direction, which Čapek-Chod represented, is reality laid bare, beauty and ugliness, reality in one - life, what it is. However, Karel Matěj Čapek-Chod was also a master of detail, the genius of a peculiar language full of archaisms, patvaria and neoplasms, remarkable ideas and unknown foreign words, sensitive psychologist with a rich life experience, a diligent and capable writer. His novels Turbine, Jindrová, Antonín Vondrejc and Kašpar Lén the Avenger are in the literary canon. Several of his novels and short stories have been made into films, e.g. Humoresque (1939), Turbine (1941), The Avenger (1959), and as a television production the short stories Chvojka (1970) and Vilém Rozkoč (1975). Writer Vladimír Neff recalled his meeting with Karel Matěj Čapek - Chod: "He was a big man with a beard and round glasses on his nose, and he drank one beer after another. And he wrote. He wrote! He spread papers all over the table, a calamari in front of him, and the pen in his hand, the handle and pen scratching continuously, except for the pause necessary to take a deep sip. And because it was a garden restaurant, the wind was blowing and his papers were being taken away, but he didn't pay attention, he kept writing and drinking beer. Waiters were running all over the place, climbing under tables and bringing back the hunted sheets. "
