Justice in medicine

A collection of 17 papers presented at another of the now-traditional conferences on the topic of ethics and communication in medicine, organised annually since 2011 by the Czech Medical Chamber. The twelfth meeting took place at the end of 2022, and this book is accordingly the twelfth in the series. It features reflections on justice in medicine not only from doctors of various specialisations, but also from lawyers, ethicists, psychologists, and theologians. They focus on the categories of distributive, procedural, retributive, and restorative justice, and consider justice in a consumer society, in a society divided into “the poor” and “the rich,” or in situations involving the problematic allocation of resources, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea is put forward that while the world may not be just, medicine can be.
This continuous series of publications by the Czech Medical Chamber on the topic of ethics and communication in medicine is unparalleled in both domestic and international literature. The individual books serve as a source of information, a stimulus for discussion, and as teaching material for medical faculties and healthcare schools.
In 2016, the editors, Prof. Radek Ptáček and Assoc. Prof. Petr Bartůněk, received a prestigious award for this publishing achievement—the Bedřich Hrozný Prize—from the then-rector of Charles University, Prof. Tomáš Zima.
