Josef Toman: After us the flood

This sweeping historical novel vividly and vividly evokes the atmosphere of ancient Rome during the reigns of Tiberius and Caligula. The noble Roman society and the Roman senate represented a class of privateers who, in their desire for wealth, had formed an alliance with Caligula, and as long as he promoted their interests they kept him at the head of the state. The fate of the senator's young son Lucius Curion, a successful soldier-diplomat who is eager for a career and becomes an unprincipled henchman of Caligula's rampage, and the actor Fabio are the focus of the novel. Fabius comes from the Roman poor and is a tragic spokesman for the petty Roman people. A brilliantly cast dramatized reading for a sequel.
