Jiří Haussmann: The Great Production of Virtue
The invention of a substance capable of suppressing selfishness and awakening love for one's neighbour brings two neighbouring states to an irreconcilable war. A satirical anti-utopian novel from 1922, directed by Jiří Horčička and featuring great performances by Jaroslava Adamová, František Smolík, Jaroslav Marvan, Jiri Dohnal, Walter Taub, Karel Máj and others. In the work of the Czech poet and prose writer Jiří Haussmann (1898-1923), contemporary critics saw a successor to Karel Havlíček Borovský and Jaroslav Hašek. His most comprehensive work is the anti-utopian novel The Great Production of Virtue, reflecting the fresh experiences of the First World War, into which Jiří Haussmann was conscripted in 1917. The second equally important source of inspiration was Karel Čapek's novel The Factory for the Absolute.
