How history was written in the 13th century
Around 1275, Primat, a monk in Saint-Denis, completed a history of the French kingdom in French. His Romance of the Kings, as part of the Great French Chronicles, became for a long time the cornerstone of the "national" history of France. At whose instigation did he create his work? Can we find his own thoughts here, or did he just interpret the views of the sponsor? To what extent was the medieval compiler and translator an author and historian in the modern sense? < br> This book was supposed to be the culmination of a lifetime of research on medieval history and chronicling by Bernard Guenée (1927-2010), but he died while finalizing it. After his death, his pupil Jean-Marie Moeglin took up the unfinished manuscript and six years later brought the book to publication.
