Honoré de Balzac: Eugenie Grandet
Eugenie Grandet is one of Honoré de Balzac's masterpieces. The novel, first published in 1833, tells the story of the power of money. The main characters are the modern-day Harpagon - Grandet, whose true wealth is unknown even to his own family, and his daughter Eugenie, whose dedication and generosity are the opposite of her father. The dramatic plot begins when Eugenie lends her own money to her cousin to save him from bankruptcy. Ota Ornest's production taken from the repertoire of the then Chamber Theatre in Prague.
