Henrik Ibsen: Phantoms

A scandalous family drama by a Norwegian author in an excellent translation by František Fröhlich. The family drama, which the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen completed in the autumn of 1881, is often described as a "breakthrough work" in the path of modern drama. It has the dimension of a tragedy, but it is written in everyday prose and the author only needs five characters to arch the dramatic arc. At the time of its creation, however, Phantoms was declared an "open sewer," and the scandal the play's release caused exceeded Ibsen's expectations.
